Obama refuses to change contraception mandate for religious institutions.

The Obama administration announces that it will not expand an exemption for religious groups that object to its requirement for health insurance plans to cover sterilization and contraception – including abortion-causing drugs – free of charge.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), sharply criticized the Obama administration as it “ordered almost every employer and insurer in the country to provide sterilization and contraceptives, including some abortion-inducing drugs, in their health plans.”

On Friday, the Obama Administration re-iterated the “contraceptive mandate” requiring all insurance providers cover the full range of FDA-approved drugs and devices would remain intact; this includes drugs that work after conception to destroy life rather than prevent it. The statement included a postponement of one year for religious groups that do not already carry contraceptives and additionally would not be exempted under last year’s narrow definition of “religious employer.”
